Termites can be a terrifying proposition for homeowners, but even more so for senior citizens. Seniors are already on a fixed income and most can barely pay their bills and taxes, let alone afford major home repairs. When it comes time to do the monthly budget, there just isn’t room for termites. Termite damage constitutes about five billion dollars annually in home and property repairs, and that’s just for the termites we know about. Most termite damage can remain hidden for ten years or more, depending on the type of termites and the area of infestation.

For seniors in Echinitas, California, the home repairs are not as scary. The Echinitas Rotary Club has a group of volunteers that can help with that. The Home Team is a group of members who volunteer their time and their skills in to do home repairs for area senior citizens. Many seniors are afraid to ask for help or don’t know where to get assistance. The Home Team does more than just home repairs, they also offer a voice by contacting management and letting them know the law. In one case the Home Team did the necessary repairs and then contacted the resident manager to let them know that maintenance was mandatory, not optional.

The latest project for the Home Team was to replace a termite infested patio roof for an area senior. She said that she knew who to call because she was a rotary club member and had done fund raising for another chapter. Most seniors only learn by word of mouth but once the repairs are started in a neighborhood, other seniors come forward to ask for help too.

In the ever changing world we live in, it is comforting to know there are still good Samaritans out there who step up as the Echinitas Rotary Club has to improve living conditions. Many of us would love to live closer to our relatives and help out around the house. Most of us must live where we can work. If you would like to help with initiatives in your area, contact the local Rotary Club Chapter and find out what you can do to help. There are over 32,000 chapters in 166 countries so there is surely one near you. The Rotary Club’s mission is to address the concerns of Health Care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy and the Environment. For the senior citizens in Echinitas, their home environment is made better by the Home Team.

Termites in Mesa are usually detected after some damage has already been done, but it doesn’t have to be that way. A free termite inspection could be the first step in breaking the cycle of damage and repair that is costing homeowners more each year. The pest control professional that inspects your home will show you areas of concern and help you develop a plan of protection that could save costly repairs in the future.
